Hi Teeitup and boa_jason.

I want to take a look and see how I can help. Could you please PM me your name, phone number, VIN, mileage, and dealer info?

boa_jason: yep, you described my noise almost exactly.

As for noisy injectors, mine only makes the noise when I'm in gear and accelerating. I can throw it in neutral and rev it a little and get no tick/click/flutter, whatever you want to call it, noise. So it doesn't sound to me like it has anything to do with the engine or exhaust.

Took mine to the dealership a couple days ago and sure enough, they think everything looks and sounds normal... I can't figure out what it is so who knows, maybe it is normal on these 2013 models. I'll keep digging into it and let you guys know if I come across any other info.

Default same noise

Hey guys i have a '13 STX 5.0 4x4, I have the same noise. Its like a ticking/rubbing sound that rotates at an rpm dependent on speed alone. This noise for me occurs around 30 and above and just gets louder and the frequency increases the faster i go. I know the noise is there at lower speeds its just I think I cant hear it because below 30ish the cabin does a good job insulating it out. I really dont want to take it into the dealership as it is a ways away and I didnt buy it there, so i tried to narrow it down. Heres what I have so far,
At highway speeds (60ish) it is noticeable, to test its relation to the engine/trans I wanted to isolate the variables,

1, at 60 w/ noise present, I shifted to neutral and shut the engine down. Noise was still there and unchanged. tells me its not related to the engine or any engine driven component in the trans, so this leaves the final output shaft into the transfer case and back; still culpable.

2, I wanted to make sure it wasnt the hubs so I unplugged the vacuum line to the hubs, confirmed they were locked in place by trying to rotate the cv shafts and front d-shaft with the engine on, yes they were locked; went for a drive in 2-wheel with the hubs locked, no change. Noise still there.

3, Plugged the lines back in confirmed they worked, shifted to 4 wheel high and after a few miles in 4 high noise is unchanged save for the transfer case chain noise on top of it.

4, with the engine nor hubs not suspect Its time to isolate some more variables. I took the front wheels off to ensure the braking system was not the culprit or loose rims etc. nothing out of the ordinary, no loose factory rotor retainer clips etc... nothing.

5, Suspecting either the rear wheels or the transfer, I jacked the rear off the ground, placed jack stands underneath chocked and chained the front wheels, (it was in my garage facing the house, explain that to insurance...) and ran the truck on the stands. Advancetrac didnt like me and threw all types of stuff even disengaged, whatever still ran fine. Heres what i found:

1, Noise is still present at same speeds as before

2, the rear wheels had no noise emanating from them except for a slight rub from the pads, not the noise though

3, after some quick praying as my nuts were inline with the rear tire as I rolled under with my creeper I heard the noise coming right from the transfer case where it bolts to the transmission. I confirmed a little more precisely with my stethoscope that the noise became fainter the further down the transfer case towards the rear d-shaft and increased the closer I got to the transmission. Its not coming from the transmission though as the noise wasn't present on its body only the coupler, back.

4, I checked the fluid in the transfer case and of course from the factory it wasnt filled to the plug. It had maybe a quart; quart and a quarter in it. I drained the fluid, put some mobil syn ATF in it, filled to the plug and drove around, with a few miles after the fluid fill, its a hair quieter however it is still there and very noticeable. Maybe with mileage it will diminish. Right now my truck sits with 620 miles on it and a noise that is driving me crazy. I made the mistake of pointing it out to my wife who didn't notice it initially, well that was a mistake. Did you fix it yet? did you dix it yet? take it to the dealer!! Ugh

If it doesnt go away or make a noticeable improvement in a few thousand, it is going in to the dealership. Id like to give it time to break in.

starting to wonder if its something internal that is bad, input bearing, planetary gear set... damn

Oh warranties, ode to thy comforting blanket; thine ability to cloak mechanical quandaries whilst placing responsibility upon parties thrice is simply superb. Inferably, thine ability to masquerade as inculpable, jovial ownership for a finite term thus allows thy heart to be filled with nepotism and to temporarily soothe thy wearisome fret.

Screwith you Ford.

It may be ^this^.
Take it in and get it checked.

I had a 'ticking' noise on mine, only to be told "it was normal".
Then the timing chain snapped, and now I got to get my engine rebuilt.

jds3403 Thanks for the detailed analysis. Holding out hope that one of us will crack the code. My sound is still intermittent enough that it has me still trying to find the right combination to replicate it on demand, before I take it to the dealer.

Default Timing chain

It's not the timing chain. I laid out my analysis thus far in a previous post and from the troubleshooting I eliminated the engine as a culprit. I turned it off at highway speed and the noise was still there. It is very constant and again is only dependent upon vehicle motion/speed. Thanks for your input though.

I wouldn't be so sure it a warranty thing. Is it a clicking or maybe more like a ticking. My 2010 has had a ticking sound almost since new in the same area. Sounds almost like an exhaust leak. I can hear it most when I'm in a drive-thru with the window down. The sound bounces off the brick wall.

I'm told (by the dealer) it's just a normal noise. I work with a guy that has the same thing on his Ford F150 that is a couple years older.

Bottom line is I don't know what it is but I'm told not to worry about it.
