You can do it but no way is it cheaper then selling and buying a 4x4. Not a chance.

It actually is cheaper, iv priced it out before, but decided I'm happy with what I have. I paid my rig off already though so a raptor or maybe an fx4 will be next. To the OP do what you want with your rig. Just do your homework and you will be fine.

I'm sorry but you can't convince me it's cheaper to convert a 2wd into a 4x4. How?
You have to buy a parts 4x4 (even a wrecked one is $9000+++), find a mechanic who you have to pay labour, convert every 4x4 specific part over and in the end you have a frankentruck that's not worth near as much as a real 4x4 and people won't want to buy. You also have to deal with the wiring, the 4x4 selector and a host of other things such as a transmission.
Oh yeah, and you still have an essentially worthless parts truck sitting in your yard you have to find something to do with. How is it not cheaper to sell your truck and spend a little bit more and buy a 4x4?
Doesn't make sense. It's not, that's why.

You people have a warped view on reality. As I said, not everyone cares about resale value. You don't buy a new truck to sell it later at a profit, not going to happen. Maybe you don't have the ability to do the work but he might, or he may have friends that know how and will help for free or cheap. He might have connections at a salvage yard to get cheap parts. I know for a fact I can convert my truck to 4wd for $500 maximum cost, but my truck is old.

You should. There are a few major factors in cost of ownership and they are fuel mileage, reliability and ease of repairs and resale value. If you buy something with zero resale value, you're basically giving away your money. It may be fine to you but IMO it's dumb to not care about it. You may not make money but I'd like to keep losses at a minimum.

Considering I have never spent more than $1200 on a vehicle yes I don't care about resale value. I just bought a beautiful conversion van for $500 that I drove home and am still driving. I refuse to spend $40,000 for a truck when my $700 truck does everything yours will do and I don't give a **** if it gets scratched.

If hes in the position he has to sell it tomorrow or 5 years from now, He don't need to be converting anything. lol
I'm like Sean, resell value means nothing to me.

No one has touched on the computer controlled aspect of such a transformation, is it doable? Yes. Will it cost more than trading in for one already set up. YES by a HUGE factor.
No way in hell could it be cheaper and that's going on my ability to make all the computers play nice with each other, farm that out to a tech with the skills and equipment and you would probably be able to buy another complete 2 wheel drive truck.
Trade it in and be done with it, your pipe dream is just that and in no way economically feasible.

Why would one have to sell their new truck tomorrow? Because they couldn't afford it in the first place and shouldn't have bought it. You most likely wouldn't even come out ahead so it wouldn't help your lack of money situation, especially if you have to add a few grand to it because you didn't get payoff value.
