I almost had this thought about my own brand new 2014. I found in the owners manual something about it having a, for lack of better words, start mode. Just looked at the manual and it said the engine can continue cranking for up to 15 seconds once the key hits the start position. Out of curiosity the last few times I've thought about it, I have just tapped the ignition to start and I think it really does know when the engine catches and then releases the starter motor. Because of this, I wonder if there isn't a hesitation that can be noticed, as you said. The engine starts so quick it's a bit hard to tell. Anyway, it's hard to answer your question, but it did make me think of this reply so I'm willing to bet it's not out of the ordinary???

My 2013 has been doing that for a while now brought it to the dealer they said that they could not find anything wrong of course. I know what will happen when the warranty runs out something big will happen and I will have to pay out of pocket.

I don't think that's an issue. My 2014 does it. You also don't have to hold the key in the forward position once the start cycle begins.
