At 8K you've got a truck that's just broken in good. The 4.6L is a bit sluggish I agree, but they are very reliable engines. I've owned four different vehicle with the 4.6L, and none gave me any serious problems. Just routine maintenance. And yes, I would say change all the fluids, oil @ filter, flush the radiator, get new tires, and possible the plugs. With the age of all that stuff it's a good idea. The truck should last you a long time with a bit of TLC up front.
