2002 f150 rear end
Hi,
I have 2002 f150 supercrew. It is making a roaring noise from the rear axle. Had it looked at could be rebuilt or replace. My question is if I do nothing at this point what might happen? Is it safe or could it lock up? Could it do any other damage than the rear itself?
Thanks
Mike

Thanks for the reply. I will get it fixed with a new one but wanted to wait a bit. It still drives smooth just a roaring sound. I can stand the noise just wondering if its okay to drive it the way it is since I will eventually replace the whole rear end.

Is it vibrating at all, cause that could be your u-joints on your driveshaft. Also if it isnt vibrating and it's in your case, then that means you probably need axle bearings or your gears arent being lubricated etc. Change the rear casing fluid, replace the noisy bearings, don't let it get bad, if it is making noise then it is already pretty far into starting to wear other parts

There is no vibration just a roaring sound. The guy who looks at it put a stethoscope to it and determined it is coming from the rear. He thinks there is a bearing in there that needs rePlaced. I was just wondering if it's okay to drive this way for a while until I get it replaced.

the longer you wait the more its gonna be to fix it, trust me. I had a bad bearing (pinion to be exact) and eventually it ruined the pinion shaft, i dont know how long the bearing was bad i bought it like that, i ended up having to replace the whole rear end (it was cheaper).

Thanks for all the replies. I will get a new one just need to drive it about 200 miles tomorrow. I was quoted $2200 for a Jasper with 3 year warranty or 100,000 miles. Is that reasonable?

check local junk yards unless you want a warranty, they will give you one but its basically long enough for you to get it installed and make sure it doesnt roar. I would recommend a new one though with the 3 year 100k mile warranty.
