1996 vs 2003 F150 - Trying to decide
I'm new to the forum but have been reading through a lot of good information!
I really need a truck to get around in bad weather and haul dirt, mulch, junk, lumber, etc around town. I've narrowed down my choices to a 1996 F150 with a 5.8L V8 automatic with the 8ft bed or a 2003 F150 XLT with a 5.4L V8 automatic. The 1996 has 165,000 miles and the 2003 has 125,000 miles. I don't have much history on either but they both seem well maintained. I didn't notice any odd sounds or feels in the transmissions. I'm just looking at what might give me my best bang for the buck and last for the next few years. The 2003 is $5,000 more and I'm not sure if that's worth it. Is there any big reliability difference between these models? I'd appreciate any thoughts/opinions.
Thanks!

Five-0 Ret.
If it's going to be a work truck, and not a daily driver I would save yourself the 5000 dollars. The '96 will do what you need. If you're thinking you will drive it more the '03 may be the way to go, but make sure the inherent problems with the 5.4 have been addressed. Good luck in your decision.

5.4 didn't have issues in 2003. Those started the 2004 model year when they switched them from 2v to 3v.
