08 SCrew Lariat or 10 SCrew Platinum
Hey Guys,
I'm new to the forum and i have a good dilema already(I think).. My friend has a 08 SCrew 4x4 Loaded Lariat 5.4 w/36,000 miles and in great shape for $24,000. But(There's always a BUT!!!!) it has only had 3 oil changes in that time( Never any problems, runs great just hasn't done any PM).. It's a lease so he never really cared to take care of it.. Is this a deal breaker??? or
option #2 Spend the xtra $20,000 on a 10 SCrew 4x4 Platinum and start from scratch...

Yes, that is a deal breaker. Assuming he didn't use full synthetic, the lack of oil changes makes for a buildup of sludge. Your friend is an idiot for not changing the oil, and you would be an idiot if you bought it. Platinum would also score some bad-*** points.

$20K is a lot of money though. Are you looking at doing any upgrades? Would you have to finance the Platinum? I'd suggest taking the 08 to the dealer and having them check the motor out, if they don't see anything wrong, get it instead!

As of now, I'm not plannning on doing any upgrades(Have no idea how long this will last.. But it's worth a try). Just plan on using it as a daily driver for my A & B job... I really like both trucks... but, since i'm not a millionaire. I'm trying to figure out which one is the most economical(Possible problems due to lack of maintenance or damn financing!!!) without getting screwed at the end..

I thought about getting the lariat instead of the platinum.. But then i kept on thinking: (In for a penny, In for a dollar...)I know its more than a dollar. But if i'm this far, might as well jump in a little deeper..

I definitely agree w/ you that he's an idiot.. But it's to late to save him
... I would love to save that truck, especially for that price... I know that he hasn't done any maintenance to it and there is no way that he used synthetic.. Thats why he leases it.. I'm on the fence with this one.. I know the platnium is bad *** but so is that payment.. Thats why i'm here to get a little guidance and get pushed one way or the other..Thanx again.

So Nick, your saying he didn't do any maintenance at all? Thats never good. NTM the fact that he probably beat on the truck in ways other than not taking care of it. Slamming the tranny into gear while on the gas, taking excessively large bumps very fast (not the worst in this case, but doesn't help the front end), paint would probly need a good coat of wax to make up for the neglect, interior was probly kept unclean, meaning stains and tears and what not...
A used truck is always in 1 of 2 categories: Good deal, good truck and worth it, or bad truck and not worth it due to extra maintenance costs and lower expectancy of life. I agree that you could just get the truck checked out to see what was wrong, but would you really want to be driving around a pickup that has been neglected and beat on? It's like getting an animal shelter pet, except the pet won't risk costing you thousands in repairs.

He probably used the worst Lube N' Go oil since it was a lease vehicle. 12K/oil change is pushing it 5K for all but the best synthetics. If you are really interested in the truck then have the current oil oil checked for metals at a lab. Personally I try to avoid any vehicle that wasn't maintained well, even it it is low miles.
