Default 04 F150 5.4 Trinton Front Differential gear ratio

Man I just got some bad news from my repair shop. Are you ready for this? I have 95k miles on my truck and I was just told my intake manafold is bad and my front differential is bad. I need to know what the front gear ratio is for this truck.

Thank you

That'll show you where to find your axle code and what the axle code means.

agreed, also your front and rear differentials have the same gear ratio, just an fyi. what does he mean by bad? as it it's chewed up? or what? Pretty sure you would know if you were using 4x4 and you busted something. They usually don't just go bad especially the front one that doesnt get much use.

This morning there was alot of grinding noise. sounded like gears were being chewed up. I was told the front diff needed to be changed. From what I'm seeing the front is 3.73 does this sound right?

Your front and rear have the same gear ratio, only difference is ones 8.8 frt and 9.75 rear if you have a 5.4

its probably the 4x4 actuators not the differential. the diff doesnt even spin if your in 2wd.

i doubt the front one would ever go. its barely used unless you did 95k miles in 4x4 on concrete

Default Thanks for info!

I have been with this shop for over 14 yrs. He is a very rep guy. I know we will not know know for sure until he opens it up, but it didn't sound good when I was driving. Also I'm pretty sure if there was a lack of grease in there this could happen right? At this point I just need to get it fixed. Then I have to deal with the intake manafold.

there is no such thing as grease in your differential. its filled with gear oil.

if your hearing a grinding noise in 2wd, and its coming from the front end, like i said, this is IMPOSSIBLE in 2wd.

your front drivetrain DOES NOT spin or move while your truck is in 2wd.

if your grinding in 2wd it it because of the IWEs (integrated wheel ends) on your CV axles. either the actuator themselves are shot, or theres a vacuum leak to the solenoid and its trying to engage while your driving (hence the grinding noise)

its a very common problem on these trucks and you will grind in 4wd as well.

Okay thanks schissler. I will ask my tec about this tomorrow. I did find out that the gear ratio is 3.55 not 3.73.
