Now granted, this was Ford's first foray into an all electric Diesel, and quite frankly had a steep learning curve on fixing them. However, during the run of the 6.0, 2003-2007, Ford sold more of these than Chevy/GMC and Dodge combined. This created a want and need to find and solve the problems. The good thing is, every known problem has been identified, solved and fixed. Both through the aftermarket and Ford themselves updating the design of the parts.
Here is a perfect example. My dad's construction company ran 4 6.0 all bought new. Every winter, 3 of them because my dad drove the other, had fluid maintenance done by the driver and our mechanic. They changed the oil, coolant, transmission and rear ends because they worked the hell out of them. Now my dad's truck just got the oil done. Well, wouldn't you know, my dad's truck was the one with all the problems. The coolant broke down and would clog the oil cooler, which then deprived the EGR cooler of coolant, which would make the EGR cooler a pressure cooker and take out the head gaskets. It took Ford at least until 2009-2010 to discover why all this was happening. There are now the fixes now for this and once it's "bulletproofed", never a worry again. We have gone through his truck and he still drives it today. We found the harder they're driven, with good maintenance, they will last a long time.
I also don't think there is a stronger bottom end to a motor than the 6.0 on a lite duty truck. They just don't fail, ever. The transmission is dead nuts reliable and the 2005+ coil sprung front chassis is proven tough. Ford still uses the same chassis today that a 2005 came with.

Don't get me wrong I LOVED my diesel, but like all diesels not just the 6.0L maintenence is EXPENSIVE! I know a few people with 400 miles on their 6.0l and it's still going strong. I didn't mind fixing and replacing parts on it because it gave me an excuse to make it bigger and better. But in the end it really was just too big for my commute, and maintenence just became too much for me. $100+ oil changes every 5k miles and an additional $80 fuel filter replacements every other oil change. Sucks I had to sell it but I really like my 2013 fx4 now. I will get a diesel later down the line. I was only 21 when I bought it so maybe when I'm a little older with kids I'll look into another one because I'm going to need a much bigger trailer. Lol.
