Default V10 Reliability

How good are the 99-04 v10 2v compared to the
05-10 v10 3v. I know the 3v has alot more power but I'm really looking for dependability and reliability. Does the 3v have the same cam phaser issues as the 5.4? Any input will be appreciated.

The newer V10 3v's are pretty good. Although they need to be looked after like everything else.

No cam phasers on the newer V10's

Thank you for clarifying the cam phasers. So the only real problem is the spark plugs getting stuck in the head. As far as generations go any pros or cons to the 05-07 and the 08-10?

No worries. They run a fleet of V10's in the F550's at work. All 2013's, All V10's. miles better than a diesel option IMO, Quiet and clean, no smelly diesel fumes and Tick Tick Tick, The 6.2 boss in the lesser dutys is a nice motor as well.

The 08+ use's a 12mm plug + 8L3E coil.

The motor's like to eat Serp belts and tensioners (the tensioners sometimes eat the timing covers) but that is a by-product of extremely excessive idle.

All in all a good motor although a gas guzzler.

I had no idea they still made them in the f550. Can you give me some info on the horrible mpg I should be expecting.

I'd say the older 460 big block is more reliable.

if you find one with low miles it will usually be a good runner. mine is a 2000 MY and I used it for plowing lots of snow and she spit a few plugs out but you aren't stranded when it does that.

How does a v10 stack up a 5.4. With easy driving and no towing. Any significant gains.

Smelly diesel fumes? Not quiet? You clearly have no experience with the 6.7s. The only ticking on a 6.7 is when the PTO is functioning.

A ton more power but worse on fuel. My 5.4 did about 12 mpg, the v10 does 10. But get towing something or plowing and the v10 gets 10mpg all day while the 5.4 suffers because of the lack of power.

The v10 is like a diesel without the maintenance and expense of the new ones. They're reliable, easy to work on and have a ton of *****. Very underrated motor and past the manifold stud problems sometimes they like to have, they're great motors. I have a 99 f250 with one that is a full time plow/work truck and it runs great. Zero problems, does work twice as good as the 5.4 we had.
