The V10s are great engines. If its been well maintained it should be good to go. If its been abused I would steer clear. Sometimes it's hard to tell how a vehicle has been treated. I have been burned by buying a previously abused vehicle and it was not fun. You may want to have a trusted mechanic look it over before you commit. Good luck.
I wouldn't do it, unless you need the v10. If you need the v10 I'd look to trade for a 7.3 instead of the v10.
We switched to v10s from the 7.3 when diesel first hit 4 dollars a gallon. The mpg was terrible and not quite the pulling power of the 7.3. We also started having a lot of trouble with them after 180k and most crapped out around 200ish. After 6 months we started replacing trucks again with diesels.

I'm actually surprised about that. I know people with 7.3s and that's the only truck they'll buy and they love the mpg, even with the upgrades under the hood.
