Fried Okra

Asking about my sons pickup...I rode with him the other day and you can be doing highway speeds and let off of the throttle and it appears to be coasting with no engine braking. Like it is out of gear and the tach drops back to like 600 rpms or so. When you give it some throttle, it goes back to what you would normally expect..When it is in the tow/haul mode, it performs as I would expect and has the engine braking that one would expect. Is this normal for the turbo diesel models or is this an issue?? He is kinda clueless about how it is suppose to work. Thanks Hope that makes sense. Jimmie

He has a faulty coast clutch. Its pretty common in this transmission (4R100) and usually caused by a failure of the snap ring that holds the clutch pack together. Actually the snap ring usually pops out of its retaining groove because it wasn't machined deep enough. To my knowledge it won't hurt anything to drive it like that.
