"Have a buddy who has a 2000 f350 XL (bare basic, no cruise control) 7.3 6speed 2wd four door flatbed single wheel with 198k unknown maintenance record has new cam sensor, high pressure oil pump, ICP sensor and one new injector. He's going to sell me for 6k. He claims 14-18 in town and 25 highway

I'm gonna be working on the pipeline.

My current truck is a 2002 f250 4x4 5.4 with 33 in general grabbers with 147k perfect maintenance record. I'm going to get 4500-5000 for it. I get 12 mpg max.

Im really debating because of the highway mileage I get 12 highway max. 400 out of a tank(120$) usually. He claims 700 out of a tank(140).

Do you think this is a good deal/worth it for me? I don't like the fact that it's not 4wd. But that helps on the highway. And if I want to go off-road I can buy a toy. Or should I hold out and wait to sell and get a 4wd?i will be doing a bit of highway driving. 8 hours round trip twice a month. And my f250 gets 10-12 highway mpg. Would it be worth it?"

Well, basing off general knowledge about this, I'd say a tuner, regear and smaller tires. I'm running 33s on my 2010 F150 XLT with the 3V 5.4L, and I get 12 around town here. I've got 3.55s out back, and I've got plenty of go. Thinking about backing down to a 3.31 honestly, because I ride at like 1900 rpm, I think at 65 in 6th gear. But that's enough about me.

If you have stock wheels, try finding lighter alloy wheels with the bolt pattern of your truck. Get smaller tires - 31 inch would be the smallest I could ever allow myself to go, considering stock on my truck was 29.

Things you should most definitely get, though - Cold air intake, tuner.

A 97-03 f150 is a good choice in my opinion. 7.3 at best will get 1-2 mpg higher, but cost of fuel, oil changes, fuel filters etc is way higher.

I'm going to call bs on 25 mpg highway. My father had a 99 f250 and got 19 highway. I have a 96 7.3 and I get 15, granted my truck is lifted on 315/75/16's

But the 7.3 is a great motor. I would recommend it. Just get prepared for $70 oil changes.

25mpg is possible. It's gonna take about 5k to achieve that from stock. My buddy spent about 4k worth of upgrades on his 01 and saw 24mpg.....if he kept his foot out of it. With his foot in it he saw about 15. Lol.

Maybe at 55mph with a tail wind. The best I have personally seen is 20-21. And I have had a lot of friends with diesels. Many which are modded

65mph. He had a hpop, bigger turbo, intake, exhaust, de-EPA'd (Lol), stage 2 injectors, and a tune. We had to hand calculate the mileage since he put taller tires on it. His best was 25.3 for 300 miles. After that, everything was broken in pretty good, so the lead foot came out. He didn't hit 20 the rest of the time he owned it. Lol. The tires were 8 ply rated, but they were tall and skinny. IIRC they weighed about 60lbs. The wider ones were like 73lbs. This was 8 years ago. I'm sure it could be done better nowadays.
