I had the 5.4 before as well, I tried everything like chips, exhaust, intake, fuel systems and after all that I gained about 1 more mpg, sorry man should get a diesel. Not much you can do

Trade it in for a diesel. A 3/4 ton truck is not something you buy for fuel economy. No matter what you do you are not going to improve those #'s very much.

I developed a transmission leak at 22K miles in my 2010 Harley Edition F150 5.4 6 speed auto. It's been at the dealer for two weeks tomorrow and I'm getting 27 MPG on the 4 banger Escape they lent me. That's one way to improve mileage. Another is buy an echoboost F150 but I'll wait for a few years on that one until all the claims are proven and TSBs have been issued. A truck is a truck is a truck and mileage will alway be less than a car. I'm looking forward to seeing the 2013 Focus ST hatchback with echoboost. I might even buy one if I don't get overly pissed off at Ford over this transmission issue. The ball's in their court.

Diesel is the only way to go for an F250. I looked at a whole whack of them in gas before settling for an F150 just so I could achieve decent MPG. I'll definitely be upgrading next year to a diesel F250, I'd recommend you'd do the same in time. The money you pay upfront for a powerstroke engine is very worth it in the long run.
Like everyone has said, there's no way to improve gas milage with those big guys. A bunch of my buddies have them, and they say it kills them at the pump.

yup a 250 with a gas engine is a joke I am sorry. My dad just got an 00 excursion with the 5.4 cause he is dumb I guess and he gets 14-15 going 65mph.

Shoulda got the V10 makes up for it with better all around mileage with towing and hauling.

Put 39 lbs of air in the tires. Drive only when there is a tail wind and mostly downhill. Follow an 18 wheeler very closely if speeds over 65 mph. Syphon gas whenever there is an opportunity. Fill tank on free gas fill up days. Get other people to pay for your gas. Drive like the pedal can't move. Never go over 62 mph without a Semi pulling you. Shut off the motor at all stops. Never do the cold start warm up, just hit the switch and go. Ride with other people whenever possible. Trade for a new 11 ta 12, and do the above steps with it. Remove everything thats bolted down and loose, tire, jack, irons, tools, seats, center console, glove compartment, driver seat, and instal a racing seat. Tape off most of the grill for the winter. Turn the mirrors into the cab. Lower the front of the truck at least an inch and lower the front air dam an inch on its fasteners. Add a slope to the back of the cab down to the tonnue cover. As it would seem high winds are becomming more the norm on the interstates, add a jib sail to sail into the wind. Don't buy a truck with an axle above 3.25 / 1 as you need to coast a lot. Forget about torque and HP and cut cylinders until you have 4. Remove the lifters on the other 4. Add solar power and a much electric devices as practical. Electric steering, electric water pump, electric fans. Don't use AC just swelter. Forget comfort and pride, you still own an F150. On ice just speed and shut off motor and slide there.

Add one of those new fangled hydrogen gas from water systems in the box. Electrolosis, the only way to go. HHO or bust. Do rolling stops, never exactly stopping, even at stop lights, just roooll on thru if no one coming. Let semi't tow you when available.
