Yep, bought it new Long Lewis Ford here in Birmingham, AL. Might as well put their name up as they aren't concerned with customer service either. Got a note from Dearborn, said at this time my best bet was to work through my Dealer. I'm screwed. Already $10K out of pocket for repairs. Called parts today to ask what the part number was for a oil filter for my new 2.7l. Parts guy basically said go screw yourself. Would sell me one, wouldn't tell me anything else. I couldn't find it in the Owner's Manual. Here is a hint for you all.....in the 12 page index of small print, part of a 550 page Manual....don't look under oil filter, filters, maintenance, engines, changing the oil, capacity, 2.7 L.....cause you won't find anything on it. It is under a very small, 1/2 page section called Motorcraft Parts. I'll put up some pictures of what I'm talking about when I say stopped up filters, injectors, etc. This topic is all over the net and at many forums. Not sure why I just bought another Ford. Really like my salesman.....the rest of em don't show me much. M1911

I purchased this new Ford dealership filter. We cleaned the tank, the lines, the filter housing, the water separator, fuel pump, secondary filter replaced with new unit also, lines blown out, bowl cleaned......this is what the new filters looked like exactly 37 days later as the truck broke down on the side of the road......again, probably 18 to 20th time. It currently has 66,300 miles on it.

Primary filter located in fuel pump housing under the drivers door.

Secondary filter on top of the engine. Again, 37 days old. When this happens you have to clean the tank as best you can, remove the rear lines, blow out, remove the filter, clean out the housing, install new filter, remove the water separator door on the side of the fuel pump/filter housing, wash out, have special tools in the glove box for removing the front lines to the secondary filter, remove the front cap over the filter, remove the filter, clean out the lines, clean out the bowl, install new secondary filter. Hope the truck will start and you can get home for supper. This has happened dozens of times.

Yepper, ruins the fuel pump, filters, pressure regulator, fuel injectors and a whole lot of your $$$$$$$$ and time....not to mention aggravating the hell out of you.

OK, back to normal.....Everyone assumes that this is a delamination problem and rust....we did. Apparently not entirely or even mostly. The tank this dirt came from was only 9 months old.....#4 or #5 at my expense...I don't remember which. Then I learned an interesting thing from one video I happened across. The vapor vent sits in a hole on top of the steel tank. The vapor vent blows out and sucks in. If the hole it sits in is full or water, sand, dirt, muddy water, slush, salty slush, etc. , it gets sucked into your tank when it cools and draws in air. In fact there is an old TSB on it that my Dealer has apparently never heard of. It involves adding a longer section of rubber hose to get the inlet out of the depression....a $4 fix. But, I'm $10K down and counting because I never understood where all this junk was coming from.....delaminating/rusting tanks. Apparently that isn't the only problem. Dirt is being sucked into the tank and dispersed throughout the entire fuel system due to poor design. M1911

To understand this look at the picture above. This is the top of the behind the axle stock Ford diesel tank. The round thing as the front is the sending unit...it is appx 7' in dia and allows pretty good access to the tank for inspection and cleaning. Our truck has a dump so it is pretty easy to raise up the bed and stand next to the tank for inspection.....if you know you should be. Pictured is a new tank...pretty clean....new sending unit out of my pocket...$350 +. The thing in the center is the vapor vent. It is loose where it mounts to the tank and apparently is open under what Ford calls a mushroom cap. In this picture we had a slight rain, bed down. Water drained onto the top of the tank and you can see it puddled in a recession. This is of no significance as there is nothing in this depression and the truck tank top is clean and slanting forward.....so, the vent contraption isn't covered with water. Reverse the direction of the truck so that the front end is up hill and the recession with the vent will fill up with water. Get a bunch of dirt, debris, grass, sand, frozen slush, etc., etc. on top of the sending unit and this area can fill up with water even when slanting down. As the tank cools...it sucks in air....or whatever happens to be in the recess where the vent is. I think this has been to a large degree the entire problem we have been having with this truck. The dealership did not know there was a TSB, and repair costs have all been mine as I have been blamed for putting in "bad" fuel....even though we filter it through a very fine funnel to make sure the fuel is clean. FWIW....we have never found any contaminants in the fuel we have used. Just more Ford BS. M1911
