Default Tranny

If you're gonna go manual, the ZF behind a 460 should be the same as the one behind the 7.3. I would suggest a ZF S5-47, its suppose to be an reinforced version of the S5-42 with a stronger housing and better synchros in it.

I won't make a suggestion for automatics cause I don't know much about them and don't care to.

sorry to bring up an old thread bit im looking at a 92 f250 7.3 idi on saturday and id like to know what are some things i can do to make sure she's strong. i plan on changing all fluids and filters and checking for cavitation of course. also earlier someone said IDI's are slow but thats not necessarily true. i mean sure the new powerstrokes could bow them out of the water but just a well maintained 7.3 idi is only around 10-20 horse power short of the early powerstrokes until about 1999 or 2000 ish

I have one of these.... And yes.. They are the slowest thing on the roads...lol... They are FULL of torque...

A couple things to check..

Make sure it starts easy. No excessive cranking

When you start it.. Turn the key on.. and wait for the Glow plugs.... MAke sure they stay on for like 15 seconds(if its hott)... And if they start clicking... and gauges start flickering... That means you have a Glow plug bad.. Or controller... It could get exspensive if you have to replace that... But There are mods out there to do it cheaper and more dependable... My truck does this.. But it has never affected how it starts. If its super cold outside... I let it run its processes twice...

These things are a PITA on maintence... fuel filters are 32 bucks(have to change it a few times a year).. oil filter like 18... 10 qaurts of oil.. Always buying fuel additive...

These trucks are mean... and tough though... I wouldnt trade or sell mine for anything... Read this thread... Ive got alot of other good pointers in there i beleive... IF you need to know anything ... make a thread and pm me the link... I dont get to get online as much anymore..

What are you paying for it.. These engines go for around 1000-2000 dollars... just depending..

Auto or manual... The auto transmissions behind these things always shift funny... And the manuals just suck.. if you ever have to put a flywheel on it.. there like 600 bucks... How many miles? ...(doesnt really matter these things go forever)

Ask the guy if its ever been turned up... And if so.. How much.. And who turned it up lol... If he dont know... Test drive it.. and let it shift into a higher gear and then start pooring the gas to it.. try not to let it down shift tho... If you start pouring black smoke its been turned up.. If it dont put out any smoke.. Its stock.. and it probably still in good condition

Pull the most weight... ehh maybe.... Out haul... definantly not... turbo smokes a N/A motor anyday... You have to be very patient with a IDI... The onlytime you will notice a IDI has alot of power is when you hook a mobile home to it... There full of torque... 3500 sounds reasonable... if its in good shape... And dont need alot of work...

Another test you might want to do before you buy it... it get on the highway... stomp it and let it run up to about 60mph.. and then let off and stop... Make sure the engine done die.. If it dies it more than likely an injector pump going bad..

well i looked at it today and wow.. the good it had a new 7.3 motor with only 110,000 on it. so nice. and the bad. needs ball joints thr brakes feel like stepping on a sponge. steering is so looose i had to over steer just to make simple right turns. the bed is dented against the cab and the tailgate is dented out. and i thinkthe tranny has a leak. found a drop of fluid on t then i drove it and the drop came back. but i really liked that truck. might buy it and make it a project
