Default 6.0 with blown head gaskets

I have a friend whose 6.0 just blew the head gaskets. What parts need to be replaced and what should be upgraded while it's getting repaired. Any help or websites would be great. Thanks in advanced

To fix the head gaskets, the cab will need to be taken off the vehicle. I would reccomend an ASE certified mechanic to repair it, but I dont know how experienced you are with this stuff. In order to prevent future problems, I would absolutely recommend buying ARP head studs. One of my coworkers has a 6.0 pushing out 600+ HP and around 1000 ft lbs of torque. He swears by those head studs.

This video shows you how to remove the cab and the head to get at the head gaskets. It might just save you money to do it yourself, as long as you have the right tools

The cab absolutly doesn't need to come off!!!!!! I don't think we event lifted to cab when we changed the head gaskets.

Why do you think it needs gaskets? Are you sure the EGR cooler isn't bad? We thought it needed gaskets and turns out all it needed was an EGR cooler.

Youre right, however it is much harder to work on. I worked in the shop at one of the biggest Ford dealerships in NY for 3 years and 15+ ASE certified technicians were taking the cab off to repair head gaskets.

The EGR symptoms would be white smoke out of the exhaust(indicating that the coolant is leaking into the cylinders)or a white crusty substance around the egr valve or on the de-gas bottle(the coolant is getting hot and gaining pressure so it seeps out). Also, if you remove the actual EGR valve and inspect it you can tell if it is bad. If the valve has a slimy substance(soot and coolant) and if it looks like its been steam cleaned(hot coolant wiping away normal dry soot), it is usually bad. Normal EGR looks like dry thin soot.

There are only 3-4 bolts I remember the cab causing any problems. Sure it is much harder to take the cab off then 5 extra minuts fighting with a few bolts.

It's for sure head gaskets and the egr that need replacing. My buddy is replacing the head gasket with aftermarket the head studs with aftermarket and deleting the egr

Make sure you have the heads milled or you will be looking at doing gaskets again even with the studs. Removing the cab makes the job a lot easier and the truck is designed for cab removal. With the right equipment I have seen a shop pull one in 20 mins. While you are at it delete egr, I would follow faniman57's advice and check the egr cooler first because they fail quite frequently, but so head gaskets. That is why they are called 6 leakers.
