Just heard some scientist say: " people think that the reason we have summer and winter is because of the distance we are from the sun. That's not true. It's the tilt of the earth that determines summer and winter." I was like wouldn't we be further away from the sun if we were tilted away from it and closer to it if we were tilted towards it?? Which would mean that when we are closer it is summer and further it is winter and last time I checked that had something to do with distance.

The distance Earth itself is from the sun is no different though. But during summer, we are angled down toward the sun and in winter we are angled up away from the sun at 23.5 degrees, hence the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn being at 23.5 degrees north and south. The angle stays the same all the way around but the Earth spins, hence the cycle of the seasons as the Earth orbits the sun and the 365.25 days that it takes to orbit the sun.
