make sure one of those countries is South Africa or Namibia. Beautiful places, lots of business, and they speak mostly English.

My sister-in-law (my brothers wife so not an insane one) is South African. She moved to England when she was real young but it's still funny seeing people reactions when they meet someone from there who is white. For some reason people assume all Africans are black.

When I moved to the US as a kid I remember hearing that A LOT. "Hey I'm from South Africa" "Wait, but you're not black" "No crap, go read a history book"

WTF is going on in my little town. As ive already mwntioned, last week a family friend died in what we assume was a suicide. I was just told that last night there was a murder, suicide at a local motel and about 2 hrs ago a lady jumped off an overpass.

Bit of trivia. If you ever listen to ManCow talk about his early radio days and tossing albums at trucks passing by the radio station he started at, that was the bridge she jumped from.

We had Mancow in the morning here back in the 90s. Use to listen to it while working in construction.

Side story related to South Africa: My dad's cousin's husband's family (if that isn't confusing enough as it is) is from South Africa. It's funny though because my dad's side is Dutch and South Africa was settled by the Dutch so Afrikaans is mostly Dutch, just a bit different. Well she didn't tell them right away that she could somewhat understand their conversations whenever they spoke Afrikaans. That went well till she laughed at a joke they said in Afrikaans

Sounds like your town has some strange stuff going on. Sounds like the movie Hot Fuzz...

Just got back from the visitation and the funeral is tomorrow. She was a teacher for 22 years and I think every one of her former students was there: It was packed. The paper finally had something about the fire and death but, even though everyone is sure the corpse found in the house was her, they said they still have to wait for DNA testing to positively I.D. the body. How can you let a family bury a body that still hasn't been confirmed yet? I wasn't about to ask the question but it was on my mind.

I do the same with friends of ours. They are Dutch/French and when they first moved here their English was limited. I would speak in Afrikaans and they would speak in Dutch. Worked fairly well. We got to a point where we tried switching. Them speaking Afrikaans and I trying to speak Dutch. That didn't last long. While much of the language is the same, making the switch from understanding to speaking is still very difficult.
