Default Ford Escapes - small SUV for the girlfriend

Looking to buy a newer vehicle for the girlfriend, particularly small type SUV's maybe a larger one.

Anyone had the earlier 2000's Escape's? Anything to look for?

I'm searching for info other places on the internet as well, just seeing what members here experiences are.

Any other ideas for an all wheel drive, or 4x4 SUV, that I should be looking at, I'm all ears.

Trying to spend <$5000

those things if you dont run good tires they will chew them up and will sound like 4 bad wheel bearings lol. also the early 3.0s had timing cover issues with oil leaks. the rear quarters also had some rust issues but nothing structural

for the most part they are good vehicles. the go to tire that we steer everyone to at work is the BFG long trail. if i was you i would try to find one that needs tires and safe your self the headache of paying for someone elses cheap taste

Bought a new 05 for my son. changed oil and filter every 5K. Had the computer failure so that and a tune up and a battery ended up costing us about 2K, around 95K.

Only money we put in it was 3 sets of tires and 2 batteries. Sold it on CL for 5K 2 years ago with 105K. Man bought for his HS daughter. We still see it occasionally. He moved up to an Explorer. Would we by another, yes! My daughter loves her CRV.

It's so fun searching for vehicles on craigslist, you know, the part when almost nobody knows how to make an ad that makes sense or has all the info that it should.

Excellent quality pictures have always been the key to mine! A clean detailed car is important in those pictures.

Darren, I'm kinda in the same decision process for a small SUV to replace my wife's '99 Jeep Cherokee...

What I've been looking for: Ford Escape (just haven't found many nice private party deals), Jeep Cherokee (new model, preferably used), Jeep Compass, Jeep Patriot, Jeep Renegade, Honda CR-V...
