i didn't see the entire interview but the part i did see had obama basically saying that everyone needed to calm down and be peaceful. i didn't see him say anything biased in either direction.

in the link that ymeski posted, this is what was quoted:

"There is never an excuse for violence against police or for those who would use this tragedy as a cover for vandalism or looting," Obama said in a statement from where he is vacationing in Massachusetts. "There's also no excuse for police to use excessive force against peaceful protests or to throw protesters in jail for lawfully exercising their First Amendment rights."

such a snide public remark for such an innocuous statement strongly suggests to me that this spokesman, Jim Pasco, has an agenda. i'd bet anyone here $100 (i'm poor) that if you had a couple of drinks with this guy and then asked him what he thought of obama, there would be some nasty s^^t spewed forth in that conversation.

there are countless legitimate reasons to dislike obama without resorting to pettiness (as this spokesman seems to be doing).

i'm not happy when any president goes on long vacations, because the world does not go on vacation and being president is not a regular job, but he would have access to the same info about the case from martha's as he would in any other location. so his comments would be the same. Jim Pasco is nowhere near the action either. he's in washington.

for anyone who'd like to read a little more about jim pasco, here' something from 2010.

this guy screams partisan.

Odd, don't remember Obama weighing in in this one.

Maybe because the guy used the n word. Yea, that must be why.

Maybe it's also because white people typically don't go completely nuts and trash their own neighborhoods. They usually seem to exercise self-control as individuals and groups, and therefore don't require a massive police response. Usually.

What I find interesting is that for the first time, in the wake of this incident, the national news media is starting to question the wisdom of supplying local police with heavy automatic weapons, armored vehicles, advanced support equipment, etc.

Like this a revelation to them...the first time they've noticed. It's been going on for that last 13 years and this is the first time these people start asking questions? You'd think that these same reporters would wonder where all the ammo that DHS has been buying has gone. Do they think those armored vehicles are empty?

It's been happening longer than 13 years.

When I lived in MA, the local polizei capos got together and found out there was grant money available for a SWAT unit. This is a rural/suburban area, low population density (for MA) and not much in the way of gang/drug activity. The sole claim to fame of the departments in question is that the lead department in organizing the SWAT team caused a death of an elderly woman when making a no-knock raid of the deadly drug dealer's apartment at o dark 30. (Oopsie, wrong address, our apologies to the next of kin)

They formed a SWAT unit between several towns, which got them all sorts of neat toys, salary and training reimbursement for (IIRC) 2 officers per town, and access to weapons and equipment from Uncle Sugar.

When it was announced, reaction from the local population was heavily biased in the direction of "WTH do WE need with a SWAT team?"

Hasn't been needed in the 15+ years since it was announced.

The thing I see about this whole thing is there is a LOT of racism going on....by most of the protesters.

As usual, the media's rush to report first and get the scoop yields **** poor accuracy.

I'll take an accurate story delivered a few hours later, thank you.

I'm going to wait for the evidence and report to come out before making any judgement. These people throwing the race card in is ridiculous. If the cop would have been black we would have never heard about this.

If this cop did something wrong he should be dealt with accordingly, no matter the race of the victim.
