Ill start by saying that I personally believe that a marriage is between a man and a woman.

Keep it a civil discussion.
Marriage is really between individuals and their religion. The state/fed has no business getting involved.

If the states want to recognize legal unions to create a new legal status between a man and a woman, they have no business not recognizing one between two individuals of the same sex. Either way, you can still only be in one legal union at a time. Same thing as marriage, but without the questionable discrimination against sex and religion.

Also, the BS argument of gay marriage destroying the institution of marriage is insane. The institution of marriage has been dead for a long time.

my $.02. Aside from this, I'm staying out of it.

The state/fed shouldn't be involved in a lot of stuff.

There are exceptions to who pays into SS, but that comment was meant for the vast majority, not individual cases. Some teachers do, some don't depending on their states, RR employees have their own retirement system, there are exceptions, like there are to every rule.

Analysis: What's Kim Jong Un up to?
Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung "would make a threat, and wait for the enemy (the United States, South Korea, the U.N., or some combination of the above) to offer a bribe in exchange for their forbearance. They would take the bribe -- and they'd forbear," Kaplan writes.

"But this new Kim took the promise of a bribe -- then went ahead and carried out the threat anyway, even before the payment, in this case desperately needed food, came through. What the hell?"
People now want to know Kim "knows how to his family's game," Kaplan said.

"It's always been an odious game, but in the old days, when the father and grandfather were around, it would end with peace, at least for a while, if the west played along," he said.

Play race cards much?

State Rep. Joe Mitchell, D-Mobile, had an outlandish exchange via email with a Jefferson County man who asked him and other lawmakers not to pass any laws that would restrict gun ownership.

Eddie Maxwell sent a mass email to state legislators at 10:54 p.m. on Jan. 27, warning them that even attempting to introduce a gun control bill was, in his opinion, a violation of state law.

Mitchell responded from his public, ALHouse.gov email account at 11:59 p.m., telling Maxwell: "Your folk never used all this sheit (sic) to protect my folk from your slave-holding, murdering, adulterous, baby-raping, incestuous, snaggle-toothed, backward-a**ed, inbreed (sic), imported criminal-minded kin folk."

And we wonder what's wrong with our country?? My, my... I always thought that the new mantra was "Forward", right? Not living in the past?? So let me get this straight.. We should dig deep into the past when it is of benefit in an attempt to play on emotion when one has no concrete dialogue? But we shouldn't worry about history/past looking at trends of how certain things worked or as it could involve that lil document our forefathers decided to call the constitution

I'll answer as much as I've patience for.

If you don't like paying taxes . . .

- Don't drive on paved streets or highways. Half my local roads aren't paved, the only highway through town was built and maintained by the USA until 1991
- Don't call 911. Haven't and won't.
- Don't flush your toilet. I have my own cistern and buy my water in town.
- Don't bring your garbage to the curb. Burn it in the yard
- Don't fly in an airplane that uses air-traffic controllers. Haven't
- Don't use the court system. Don't intend on being prosecuted, and only the Crown can lay charges in BC, by order in council.
- Don't call the police when you get robbed. They won't help me anyhow
- Don't use the Post Office, send all your letters via FedEx or UPS. Done; I like my stuff unbroken. CP delivers junk mail, private couriers don't.
- Don't ask for a farm subsidy for not growing crops. A farm is a business, not a welfare case.
- Don't ask for a taxpayer subsidy to do business in a city or province. If your business needs subsidies, you don't deserve to be in business.
- Don't buy a sports franchise and ask the taxpayers to build your stadium. See above.
- Don't send your children to public schools. Avoiding Liberal brainwashing as much as I can.
- Don't attend a university. See above.
- Don't let Medicare pay your bills if you are over 65 or disabled. So I can hire a real doctor and not some South African who only studied for three years? No University of Cairo degree on the wall?
- Don't look for a government. No parades blocking the road on holidays? I bet puppies are crying.
- Don't look for a lucrative government consultant contract. I'm competent enough to have clients lined up for my work.
- Don't run for political office where your salary is paid for by the taxpayers. I've no need to dictate other people's lives to them.
- Don't accept government research findings that subsidize research for your industry. R&D is a bunsiness expense like any other.
- Don't be an airline and expect the government to bail you out. Why do businesses need bailouts? You should be on a GM forum.
- Don't be a car company and expect the government to bail you out. See above.
- Don't be a steel company and expect the government to bail you out. Slackers in Hamilton don't deserve bailouts.
- Don't be a company that pollutes and expect the taxpayer to bail you out. Bailouts must excite you. You bail out your kids often? How many times have you needed bail?
- Don't make use of police services. I try not to, but Gestapo cars aren't marked.
- Don't be rescued by fire department paramedic team. You mean the public one. If only I had the privilege of doing business with private medical and rescue services.
- Don't call the fire department. So they can report all my "unsafely" stored ammunition? Confiscate my DDT? Never.
- Don't expect federal assistance if a natural disaster destroys your home or business. Life does have some risk that can't be mitigated.
- Don't expect the military to defend your country. The gov't is paying them to invade us now!
- Don't visit national parks or hike in national forests. I can't hunt or goldpan in National Parks so I never visit them.
- Don't eat inspected meat, cheese, eggs or produce. There are plenty of private third-party inspection certifications to fill in. Why not let me buy unpasteurized milk if I choose?
- Don't take any medications tested and approved. My dealer tests all my medications already.
- Don't drink, bath or otherwise use the water from municipal water systems. I don't.
- Don't look at or relay a weather report. You know the weatherman works for the gov't by how often he's right.
- Don't expect a unit of measure like a gallon of gas to be a full gallon. But at least I can buy it in gallons, not liters.
...
- Don't use the public library. Who still uses a library?
- Don't go to a university affiliated hospital. I believe you've addressed education and medicine well enough.
- Don't go to university. You said that already.
- Don't apply for government grants. Or bailouts?
- Don't go to a provincial, city or municipal-run airport. Sure thing.
- Don't ask for rural electrification. Don't outlaw the noise from my generator.
- Don't ask to keep the airwaves free so your right-wing psycho radio talk show host can lie to you. I don't listen because it's all David Suzuki and the CBC.
- Don't ask for a business loan from the small business administration Loans can be gotten from banks.
- Don't drive a car that benefits from government safety regulations. So you won't take away my truck because I don't wear a seatbelt? I can have a real frame that doesn't crumple?
- Don't use electricity generated by government-owned and maintained dam or facility. New dams and bridges in BC are owned by private foreign firms. I'm sure the old ones will be sold off soon.
- Don't use currency printed by the Bank of Canada. I'll go to jail for using anything else. All currencies used in Canada must be tied to the Canadian Dollar by law.
- Don't use a bank or credit union that insures your deposits through the FDIC. Risk assumed.
- Don't buy or build a house that requires the efforts of county deed offices or needs building permits and inspections. Why would I need a permit if there's no bylaw enforcement?
- Don't get married, have children or die and expect the government to keep track of all the certificates. How will she prove that she gets half my stuff?
- Don't expect the government to keep an eye on cemeteries, crematories and funeral homes so you won't get dug up and thrown in a swamp. So Indian artifacts aren't a land claim suit anymore?
- Don't go to a beach kept clean by the state. Then they won't fine me for smoking on the beach?
- Don't use public transportation. I can't wait for the bus if I want to get to work on time.
- Don't visit public museums. Private collections are usually more interesting and less condescending.
- Don't go hunting, fishing, or camping on government property. It won't get defended for free.
- Don't cross a bridge. I get permission from the bridge's owner through a road use agreement, usually an oil company.
- Don't use truckstops or public restrooms. The ditch is more sanitary.
- Don't expect the government to protect the copyright for the works you create. Covered already. Are you of sound mind?
- Don't move to any other developed nation, because the taxes are higher in all
the others, except South Africa. The United States is more developed and less taxed.
- Don't expect your tap water to be clean and germ free. Like Walkerton?
- Don't expect there to be much wildlife left other than rats.
- Don't eat any food transported on roads. Railroads are private.
- Don't eat any vegetables in winter, 'cause they're mostly grown with "reclaimed" water. In California.
- Don't expect any workplace safety standards, labor laws, or minimum wage. Work on a service rig or fishing boat and see how well those laws are observed.
- Don't use any gasoline, oil, or natural gas ?
- Don't expect zoning laws. Then I can build whatever I want. No more sending a perfectly good car to the junkyard.
- Don't expect clean air, clean water, clean soil, etc.
- Don't expect highway signs. You mean I'll actually have to buy targets then? You might win on this one.
...
- Don't expect the government to regulate industries that have monopolies and use that power to raise your rates for reduced service and product quality. They'd better not expect the gov't to protect their stuff from vandalism.
- Don't expect the government to keep gasoline rates low, compared to the rest of the world. Gasoline is high because of Taxes. Remember how this conversation got started?
...
- Don't write any material to be published and copyright it. Publishing and copyrighting are mutually exclusive. Refer to the use of Published research data, and Copyrighted research data. Published music, or Copyrighted music.
- Don't go to your book store and try to find a book by its ISBN number. Already covered standardization and libraries. Where you drunk when you typed this?
- Don't expect the government to stop the auto companies from building SUVs that roll over and kill your wife and kids. So I won't need to modify my truck, because they'll be allowed to build a decent one?
- Don't expect the court to appoint a taxpayer-paid attorney to represent you (or your child) when you are accused of a crime. They only want to plea-bargain anyhow.
...

Remember this is about honest, modest, uninvasive, respectful, consensual, benefical governance. Not anarchy, lawlessness, or social collapse.

The point being, that civilization existed quite well before socialism. Taxation was moderate, not nonexistent. Citizens were largely responsible for their welfare.

I had to cut out much of the last post due to the 10000 character limit.
