Government Motors and Chrysler

Ford

I wouldn't call it enraged with the bailout, I would say disappointed in how utterly stupid their timing was. They bailed them out and GM still went broke, thereby being released of all bonds. And yet they can barely hang on...

Fiat is doing a much better job with Chrysler I must say and Ford is doing good as well

My company didn't get paid off when we went through bankruptcy in 09. Why should the union members get handed tax payer money to fix gm failure when the non union members, suppliers, investors got screwed? Gm already was given a loan to keep it alive through a legal bankruptcy, it was the pay off for the union support to Obama that is disgusting

Electronic monitoring by Justice Department on the rise under Obama, ACLU says

The instances of the Justice Department monitoring electronic communications such as phone calls, emails and even social network updates without a warrant has increased by as much as 60 percent in recent years, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

"Meet the new boss - same as the old boss" Well maybe 60% more than the old boss

I'm pretty sure if anyone else was in there they would have done the same thing.

Doubt it and it still doesn't make it right. Even if someone else would've done it, it's still wrong.

It should've gone through structured bankruptcy and then given bailout money if it was decided they needed it, not the other way around. Unions got the benefit while private investors got shafted.

Looks like someone was felling left out.

North Korea says a spark could set off nuclear war on Korean peninsula

A North Korean minister lashed out at the United States on Monday, warning that its "hostile" policy has left the Korean peninsula a spark away from a nuclear war.
Addressing the final session of the U.N. General Assembly's annual high-level meeting, Vice Foreign Minister Pak Kil Yon said the Koreas have become "the world's most dangerous hotspot" and pledged to use the North's "mighty" military deterrent against any "reckless provocations."
"The only way to prevent war and ensure lasting peace on the Korean peninsula is to put an end to the U.S. hostile policy towards the DPRK," he said, using the initials of the country's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

OK. The Obama administration wants the defense contractors to keep quite about the likelihood of layoffs. Something they are required* to tell their employees. Now they offer to use tax payer money to pay the contractors legal fees. Sounds like they are using our tax money in order to maintain an image and not lose votes.

Quote:
If a $16 trillion debt wasn't enough for taxpayers to lose sleep over, the Obama administration has offered to pick up the check -- at taxpayer expense -- for legal costs associated with defense industry layoffs should automatic Pentagon cuts be triggered.

I don't remember if it went down the same way when Reagon bailed Chrysler when Iacocca was there? My point is, Chrysler tried to clean up thier junk and stayed in business ! I know from personal expiriance that that auto executive types can be an arrogant bunch!

Just like politics and raising kids, if you do not get called on your misbehavior, then you will keep repeating the same mistakes !

The Chrysler Corporation Loan Guarantee Act of 1979 let them go bankrupt without having to actually go through it. Kind of a quasi-bankruptcy. Creditors sucked up big losses as MoPar paid off debt at less than 1/3 what was owed. Then they laid off about half of their employees. It showed a profit by 1983 but then the losses from '79 - '82 assured an almost 0 tax burden for years to come. They used loss carryforward to make up half of their profit so they would looked better on paper.

They also cut deep into R&D and the UAW made concessions. They continued to re-badge foreign cars and their new K models were left basically unchanged for years. The government bought a crap-load of Chrysler's as well. My first cruiser was a K-car. What a joke that thing was.
