Wiring a three way switch for turn signals
I drive an 81 f150 4x4 302. I decided to write this today because frankly there is almost nothing I could find on the net about how to do this. Recently on a lake trip I had my turn signal switch catastrophically fail which is the fancy way of saying start smoldering in the column. Being far from everywhere and only having some basics in my tool box I decided to cut the old switch's wiring being careful not to touch the main plug so I can delete my conglomeration of new wiring and put in a real switch when I get a new one. At any rate I took a three way switch from my tool box along with an old harness for wiring a trailer (car and trailer side) and wired it like so. Flasher switch wire to center post, front turn signal wires to the two outside posts with a feeder wire from each going to the appropriate wire on the harness. Brake wire goes straight to the harness. The rear lights wires go straight to the harness on the output side and to make it all work properly run a ground from the output side of the harness to the chassis. This seems to work for my truck and managed to get me home ticket free. I want to stress this is just an emergency fix to get you by, but I thought I'd share this information because I would have killed for it while I was stuck in the middle of nowhere. I can post pictures if anyone needs them.
