wiring an amperage guage ?

Default wiring an amperage guage ?

so ive been looking at schematics to wire an amperage guage and for what ever reason i just dont under stand them..... can someone explain were does the + from the gauge wire to and where does the - on the guage wire to??

i just need a basic what attaches were..
its on a 1980 f100 300i6

You're going to need to provide some more information.....mostly: what gauge are you using and what schematics are you looking at.

just a basic 60 amp parts store amperage guage similar to the one on the bottom left of the page on the link. for schematics see the top link and the guage lower link. it seems like the guage gets wired in series with the positive on the battery and the positive output from the alternator?? does this make sense?

That's one way of doing it. In short, ammeters must be placed in series with what you are trying to measure(this isn't strictly true, in theory you could remotely mount a shunt and wire to that, but I haven't found that as a option from manufacturers)

With what they are showing, the meter will only measure the current coming in our out of the battery, but not the alternator.

Make sure the ammeter is rated for the current you expect it to carry.

Just to add to what last resort has said. I would solder all lugs, not crimp. I would use #8 wire not #10, and lastly, disconnect battery before starting the installation.
