Default 1982 F150 4x4

Ok....I've been stationed out of state for a while now, came across an '82 150 4X4 that I picked up pretty cheap...I'm not one to be afraid of a problem, but this has got me stumped...Replaced distributor cap and rotor, plugs, wires, filter, oil, coolant..the usual for a used vehicle. Runs a little better...throttle sticks, but only from in the cab...just need to lube the cable. But...I've got the problem where it runs like crap for the first couple minutes (thinking choke), but once it warms up, runs pretty well...idles too low and wants to die (probably just the adjustment screw for idle) but as soon as I drop it in gear, it wants to just conk out. I was thinking torque converter, but...that should just make it not want to grab, not kill the friggin thing. I've never really been a Ford dude, so I'm not sure if there are just certian things that come in that are commonplace...Any ideas? I'd like to not have to rebuild the trans while home on leave if possible....pry will have to, but....and also..The C6 in these trucks is a 3 speed auto, right? Can they be swapped out for a more modern 4 speed (overdrive)? Haven't had the chance to drive it around, cause it dies in gear when you come to a stop and all, as well.... Any ideas would be great. Thanks.

What carburator is on it. Those years used a Centa-Venturi carburator and they SUCK. I would recommend an Edelbrock intake with a 500 cfm carb. The c6 is a 3 speed. Its a GREAT tranny. I would keep it. Ford OD's are notoriously weak. Yes you can u can put one in, just have to get one with a detent cable instead of electronic. MAke sure you don't have any vacuum leaks too.
