Default Should i buy this? 78 f150 ranger xlt

This popped up for sale for $550. Has the 400m. Battery drains over night if hooked up, bad fuel pump, some rust on the floor, and is 4x4. Would this be a good purchase? That's all the information on the post. How reliable is the 400m? Would a 460 be a direct bolt up or would I need multiple parts?

How good are you at body work? I'd offer $400 to start, no more than $500 for it. Battery might just be old or the fuel pump is shorting out and pulling power. If you clean it up and make it run you could get an easy $1000 for it.

Well, I know how to lay fiberglass and I'm not too bad at painting. Would this be a mechanical fuel pump like the 351 and 302 or would it be electric?

No such this as a 400m, its the 351m or the 400. No a 460 isn't a direct bolt up. The 400 is fairly reliable and you'll have many parts available for repair, and most parts are interchangeable with the 351m. Yeah, this is mechanical pump unless someone messed with things.

Pump is an easy and fairly cheap fix, no big deal, but who said that's really what the problem is? Throw a negative battery disconnect on for a temp drain fix, also cheap. There isn't much electrical in these old trucks, diagnosing shouldn't be terrible.

Depends on what you want it for. If you want it for a resto project and don't do body work, move along. If you want a cheap truck to fix up and drive around, I'd spend the $500.
