Default Ran hot-ran heater to cool--fan?

We took the '77 f150 w/ 302 auto, for a 4.5 hr trip, one way, the other day and it started running hot.
We slid the heater bar to HEAT to run water thru the heater core, AND ran the fan.
Does running the fan REALLY help cool water in the core?

This will settle a lil argument twixt the passengers that day.

Actually yes it does. Any air you can move across the radiator or lines cools more.

Think of it like this. You work up a sweat on a hot day (course vehicles dont sweat but still) what cool you faster. A room at 65* or a room at 65* with a fan blowing on you?

Any moving air cools the surface allowing more heat to transfer to the outside of the pipe or radiator.

Heck yeah this works. BUT... On a smaller scale. Will it stop you from overheating, it can.. But if your clutch fan dies this will not keep you on the road.

If your truck just started to run hot, check the fluid levels. If you see a leak check the water pump.

My thing is that if I change the water pump, I replace the thermostat, and upper and lower hoses.. Cheap insurance.

I got the truck 4 yrs ago and EVERYTHING was original..paper thin hoses and all.
Replaced thermostat, hoses, belt, ignition box, starter, alternator, plug wires, plugs, dist cap, points, fuel pump (after it disintegrated), and carb...added tranny cooler for pulling hay/horses.

I'll do a total cleaning flush!

Hoses and belt in the 1st week.
Everything else in the 1st 2 yrs...mostly
Carb and gas tank replaced last year....it'd run outta gas, I'd drain/clean or replace fuel filter and it'd run for 10 mins more...that only went on for a few days.......rust outta the gas tank was clogging..so changed the tank first AND then carb....and it finally quit running outta gas.

Flushing the radiator sludge is next...since it overheated badly on a 4.5 hr drive a few wks ago....trying to avoid buying a new one.....was loaded with steel to sell at a convention and over 90* in afternoon driving.

Gotta a bed I can have?

Truck is originally from PA and their rd salts have done a number on it!

Flush it all separately. Pull your radiator, close the hose holes and fill it with a bottle of the bathroom stuff clr and then fill with water. It eats calcium, lime, rust hence the name. With the hoses closed off you can turn it different directions to agitate the mixture.

Pull the water pump and tstat. Pressure wash in the inlet and outlet holes. Then run a hose in it til the water runs clear. You can also run the hose through the heater hoses if your core isnt leaking or if you dont mind a bit of water in your floor.

If your decent with a welder lmctruck.com has most all the pieces to rebuild a bed.

...and let sit how long?....a couple days?...got spare vehicles 'round this farm.

Yeah a day or so with CLR should be ok. If it is really bad, you can do it twice.
