Newbie with a 1982 F150 Lariat
Hi all, glad I stumbled across the forums. I just purchased a 1982 F150 lariat with 302 V8 and an auto trans. And 4x4. It has 117,000 miles. I have some mechanical experience and knowledge but it is limited, along with my tools. I am willing to take advice and learn along with buying new tools.I have a few questions, they should be easy to answer as I just scanned the engine.
1. How do I add transmission fluid? What's the proper procedure to check level?
2. I can't find the washer fluid reservoir. Where should it be? ****EDIT**** found it...... duh. It has a leak though, ebay time.
3. Sometimes the rear brakes seem to grab but the pedal is firm and doesn't pulsate. I reversed and braked a few times and it seems to be better.
4. Sometimes it shifts into reverse roughly, the trans fluid is clean and Is right between full and add, if i checked it correctly (see above question.)
5. Where is the cap in the valve cover to add oil, I want to change the oil and can't find the cap under all the plug wires. I assume its on the right side valve cover (looking at the engine from inside the truck)
Any general advice for me? I intend for it to be my daily driver.
It is a blast to cruise around in!
Thank you for your help!

You add transmission fluid in the tube where the dipstick is. Check the level after it has been driven or has idled a bit and shift back & forth through the gears a few times. Pull the stick out wipe it off put back in a second or 2 and pull out & check it.
The washer reservoir should be on the drivers side just behind the headlight.
As far as the brakes check the brake pads & drums. And check the brake
fluid level.
Was there an owners manual in it? If so, it'll have the recommended fluid levels, lube points, etc and a diagram of everything under the hood.
I'd also recommend getting a Ford shop manual or at least a Haynes or Chilton's repair manual.
And as far as the reverse, check the idle speed, u joints and shift linkage. Others may have more ideas.

Hello, it is cold out but the brakes grab even after driving a while, sometimes more than others. I haven't driven in the damp yet (trying to keep it rust-free). I may be mistaken and they might not even be grabbing, it's just kind of a shimmy when I go to stop. When I put the lock lugs on, one per wheel, do you suggest I jack the truck up or can I just go ahead and remove and replace one nut per wheel while it's on the ground?

Can someone recommend a good impact driver or something similar to remove lugs? I need battery powered as I don't have the setup for air tools. I am tired of breaker bars.
