Does your's have a speedometer cable and have you checked it? Had one lose part of one end and it acted somewhat similar.

my friend says to try greasing the cable where it meets the speedometer.

do you have any ideas?

The plastic gear at the end of the cable in the transmission might be worn out.

you could have a broken cable, sometimes they will act like you describe by grabbing once in a while and showing a reading but mostly the needle will just sit, hence why it works when you hit the gas, the "jerk" makes it grab. I may be way off on yours but it's worth checking out. have someone help you by spinning one end and look to see if its moving on the other, simple as that.
