Unhappy Ignition timing anomaly

Maybe I am an idiot, maybe not though...

Here's the deal;
1974 F250 with a 460, has the pertronix ignitor replacing the points. and 7mm wires.
I want to check the ignition timing, I whip out the old standby Sun timing light and hook it up and nothing...
I'm thinking wtf?? fiddle with it for a while, trying different wires, turning the clamp around (this one is directional) still nothing.. maybe the sun gun has finally died
Now I'm thinking; *no worries I'll call my homie with all the sweet tools* I come home last night sporting a fancy adjustable advance snap on timing gun.. sweet.. ..........wrong , same problem, no light at all..

Could the spark be so weak from the coil it isn't reading on the induction clamp?

to answer some of the basic questions;

Yes, the power wires on the light are hooked to the proper battery terminals.
Yes, the engine is running
Yes, I have tried putting the clamp on other wires besdies #1
Yes, both timing guns work on another vehicle
No, it is not a diesel

WOW! These 7mm wires that were installed, they're not shielded are they? Something is preventing the induction clamp from picking up the signal.
