Default Ignition problems on a 1979 F150

Hello, I have a 1979 F150. 400 4 speed 4WD. I'm making it into an off-road toy for me and my friends to have fun with. I got it after it had set in the weeds for 10+ years. The factory wiring and ignition are shot. I want to do a toggle switch and push button start. I have the toggle wired up between the positive terminal on the battery and the positive terminal on the solenoid and that works just fine. But I have the button wired up from the starter wire and where it would screw onto the solenoid. It keeps melting my 10 gauge wire in using. I even tried old jumper cable wire to use and it get that very warm. I'm at a loss. Anybody have any ideas on how to fix it??
