Default How often do I change differential oil?

So I bought my 1984 F150 a couple months ago and did all of the regular maintenance. But I occurred to me that I didn't do anything about lubing the 4x4 linkage. I've recently actually engaged 4 wheel drive for the first time and there was a little more mechanical noise than I feel is normal.
How often should I pop those differentials open and change their oil? And should I have done that already, not knowing when the last guy might have done it last, or is there a way to check the quality of it?

I would just change it for peace of mind, but if not check the fluid level through the fill bolt and fill it up to the bolt.

How do I check? What am I looking for? Dark oil is bad?

There should be a fill plug on the diff, pull it try sticking your pinky finger in if that doesnt work use straw. Dark is bad, muddy or milky is bad.

Its not incredibly expensive to do unless you buy Royal Purple for it, so I'd do it ASAP.

I usually do mine every 50k miles or anytime I submerge the rear in water for more than a couple seconds (only happened once so far).

If its milky or white, change it ASAP that's usually a sign of water. Dark is bad but its not as urgent as water issues.
