86 xlt update
Hey guys, well I got got the truck back on the road. Got rid of all the gremlins in it.
Took it to portland and back a couple days ago, 7 hours round trip. Did good, but now a new problem
Just want your thoughts on this
So just to remind you the truck is a 86 f150 xlt lariat 302 f.i. w/aod trans w/ tfi ign
When I bought it, it wasn't running. I had to replace high pressure pump, fuel regulator, fuel filters, distributor, icm, coil, coil wiring harness, tps, basic tune up, coolant and trans flush and oil change. Timed it of course to 10* btdc.
Well my problem I have currently is only under hard acceleration or heavy load.
When I get on it hard, it seems to hick up. Like the timing is off. And then it will either smooth out or i have to throw it in neutral as if to let it catch its breath haha. This started the day after the road trip. I did clean the iac valve after the trip. Not sure if that would be my issude or not. I cleaned it because I had the typical wondering idle problem.
Does fine under normal driving conditions though, so I am searching for answers. Could it be a vacuum leak?

well, pull codes for sure, or check out how to pull codes without a reader on obd1. other than that consider that you need 3 things for an engine to run right. fuel, spark, air. if your hitting the gas hard to get up a hill or accelerate from a stop and it's hiccuping, i doubt your losing air, spark is unlikely considering you've replaced all the considered components. i would imagine there is either a vacuum leak being created under strain or a lack of fuel being delivered. check fuel pump pressure and trace all your vacuum lines, spray some carb cleaner into your pcv valve and make sure you can hear it shaking around inside. spray some cleaner into your egr valve and tap it with a hammer to make sure it's moving good as well maybe.
also is it happening when your already heading down the road and goose it, or from a stop and goose it?

they are EFI and mine has an EGR delete and it does it when I'm in the top end of 3rd and 4th gear I have a 4 speed manual the lower end of all gears work fine just when you put it under load it runs like crap. I've change the fuel pumps the filter has new injectors and fuel pressure regulator an the ignition system has had every thing changed except the switch which I'm doing this weekend. in neutral the truck runs like a top you can put your foot to the floor and it wont spit sputter or lose power I've had a shop look at it ad they cant figure it out its been plugged in a bunch of times and I've talked to countless gearheads that build race cars and have old trucks and still haven't gotten it running right. so any ideas will help
thanks
