Default electric eccentrics

Greetings all, I had been reading over some things posted in the forum regarding alternators and such and its been a big help but I am missing some info and hope someone can point it out to me.

Got tired of not being able to run the wipers heater blower and headlights at the same time with out one or all becoming very sluggish. so I went and had a test done on the alternator, it was testing bad so I purchased and installed a replacement. Next purchased and installed a new voltage regulator, While doing that I had made sure all grounds ( that I could fine) were installed. even went and taped up cracked cables to the starter to prevent further damage until I could afford to replace them. Now according to the altimeter in the dash the battery is discharging and its weakening the battery, I plan to take the alternator and battery in on my lunch break to test.

Is there a ground wire that runs from the alternator to a point on the frame? The old alt did not have it.

Could I have bought the wrong voltage regulator?
I may have miswired the alternator, If so, how can be sure the wires are put back correctly? ( I could not read what the terminals said on the old alt.)

Please keep in mind I have a body and electric for a 1983 4.9 six cyl, but has a 1985 302 in the truck now. Have i dine something wrong? Thanks in adavnce for your time and efforts.
