In later ones they had a little clip in the **** that clipped it on the shaft, don't remember if yours is like that. Look for a little slot, use a screwdriver to hold the clip out.
Or on much earlier ones you had to reach up behind the dash and depress a plunger on the headlight switch to release the whole **** and shaft. I think on that style the washer **** had a clip.

vertical pin buster
If you feel around under the dash and find the switch there should be release buttons on them and push the button and pull the **** they'll come right out

Fashion a short "J" hook from a coat hanger. Feel the back of the **** where it meets the shaft for the clip. Place the hook at the clip and pull towards you while pulling the **** towards you. It is a friction lock spring clip. All 80-86 F Series are the same.

Washer switch has a spring tab, headlight switch has a release button on the body of the switch behind the dash.

On the 85, pull straight back. The inner clip on the wiper **** may stay on the stem. You will have to pull it of with needle nose pliers then reinsert into the ****.
Just pull straight back...slow and steady pressure.

Careful when pushing the ***** back on. If you push too hard after the **** bottoms out on the shaft, you'll push the back side of the wiper switch right out of the switch. It's a bear getting it back together - takes some special tricks. Happened to me when I replaced a broken wiper **** - didn't realize when I had the knew **** on all the way and I tried to push it on further. Big mistake.
