carter 1 barrel carb question
Hello, I have a 1986 with the 300 inline 6. I bought a new carb and I can't seem to tune it. Can anybody tell me how to set the adjustments. I have had bad luck with these carbs, I set the choke but after the engine warms up it runs really bad. Any suggestions would be a great help.
P.S. Is there a 2 barrel out there that I can replace the one barrel with?

I'm not sure how to adjust the carb, I'm not familiar with the one barrel carb and don't have much luck adjusting any myself. The better way to go instead of the 2 barrel would be a properly sized 4 barrel. Better fuel economy and more power. Tune with a vacuum gauge
Check out this link http://www.classicinlines.com/Vacuum.asp , also might want to check out www.fordsix.com lots of knowledge on that sight about the 300. If you had a feedback carb and replaced with non-feedback carb It might cause some tuning issues, it can be made to run with a pre-feedback carb Im just not sure how to do it. As far the two-barrel option it wouldnt be worth the effort unless you upgraded the intake as previously stated. Ronnie

Hi Tim.
Where are you located? Anyway, you want to start the truck up and get it up to operating temperature. There is a screw at the right front of the very bottom of the carburator. It will have a straight-head slot. It points out toward the right front of the truck. You need to turn the screw in (to the right) until you hear the RPM's drop. Then VERY slowly and in small increments, back the screw out (to the left) until you hear the RPM's reach their highest. You may have to repeat the proceedure a couple of times to your satisfaction, but that will do it. Also, just to be sure, make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks around the intake and or carb or vacuum hoses. You can spray some carb cleaner at the intake gasket. If the engine speeds up or smooths out, you have a leak. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
