'82 F150, Orange Wire On Solenoid Getting Hot/Burning
Hello,
As soon as we connect the + cable to the battery, an orange wire that is connected to the solenoid becomes extremely hot and starts smoking immediately. We've had to replace the fusible link today because the wire was melted, and it's still doing it.
Any idea on why it's like this? The black cable that runs from battery - to the solenoid is connected to the same peg as the orange wire that runs deeper into the truck. Could this be why? I can take pictures if needed.
Thank you in advance!

Yeah sounds like you have a direct short, a picture might help. Has the orange wire always been hooked up like this? Has the truck been running with it hooked up? I would remove the wire from the terminal do a ohm check to ground on it to see if it was shorted in the circuit if its ok then I would then hook up the + cable to see if it had 12 volts on it or if it heated up unhooked. With it having a fuse link in it should be hooked to a 12+ it sounds from what you are saying that it’s hooked up wrong or the circuit is shorted to ground.
