Yeah i need to rebuid the carb and have it tuned by a buddy of mine. upon initial startup it always does that. I took the battery out of my 1968 el camino that i am rebuilding right now.

That positive cable is MOVING!!! Before you go all crazy and start changing things, start the truck and put a voltmeter on the battery. It should be between 13.8 and 14.4 VDC. If not then your alternator is bad and not charging the battery.

I say this because your battery looks new. If it is not charging, it might not have enough *** to move it then it tries again and goes.

Also what size is your battery? CCA wise.

P.S. 504'd and I agree, turn the battery around it is weird! (although it wont help any)

Just checked the voltage, 14.44. Battery is just over a year old. CCA is 795 Regular is 1000.

Yours makes it look so easy!!! Then again this truck was sitting in a field for almost a year :/

Ok yeah, I would take the battery and alternator out of the equation. That battery should have more than enough ***** to move the starter. Did you change the cable from the seniors to the starter? Did I miss that? I see the new one from the battery.

Are all the solenoids for the F 150 the same? Meaning same part # for straight 6 as for V8?

Your first clue is that the truck is 31 years old .I have a 82 f-150 and i am still replacing wire. The wires do oxidize over time especially wires exposed to the under belly of the truck. If your wire is hot trace the problem and replace the wire.oxidation is your worst enemy as well as coroaded ground points.Grounds that are not any more getting a good ground because of oxidation will reek havoc on componets on the truck.

Invest the time , take your time.I spent the whole last summer chasing vacuum leaks and electrical shorts and grounds. It is worth the time investment of course unless this 84 is your cheif transportation.Good luck with it.

Sorry it's been a while but I've been buried in school work. After a lot of searching and a lot of curse words we found out (Sadly) that the truck has a 302 instead of a 351 that we were told it had. It is still doing the same thing starting wise. The carb is currently being rebuilt as well. We took off almost every vacuum line that we could spare, it had 8 vacuum leaks. Still trying to figure out the electrical system but we should get that figured out soon. I was finally able to get it running to the point that I was able to drive it home, the accelerator pump was leaking horribly so the carb definitely had to be rebuild.

A lot of good advice so far. Ground and supply connections are vital to starting system; good soldered cable ends are best. Also make sure the starter to block or bellhousing mating surface is clean and free of corrosive build up. You may have to remove the starter to do this, but it's important that it be clean and corrosion free. Make sure bolts and threads in the bell housing and block are not rusty. You can't have too many good ground circuits. Good luck.

Also check & make sure starter bendix is not worn or sticking or jamming in flywheel ring gear.
