Default 460 timing..

I bought my 79' with the 460 and the owner told me it had been rebuilt by the owner before him. The motor needed a little "attention" so I got it all squared away but in the process I noticed the plate under the hood called for 14* timing but mine seems to run best about 22-24*. Im assuming the difference may be due to an aftermarket timing chian for that motor that was installed? Anybody ever heard of that big a difference when going to aftermarket chains with a motor this old?

It does sound like a bit much. You did disconnect the vacuum advance, right? It also may be possible the harmonic balancer isn't in alignment anymore. Bring the #1 piston to top dead center and make sure the mark is aligned with the zero. You can see when the piston is at top dead center by putting a screwdriver in the spark plug hole and watching it for movement. See when it stops coming up and starts going down and bring it back up.

Yeah I disconnected it. I guess next time I get to poking on the truck, I'll try that, just so I'll know for sure. Should have done it when we were checking the compression. Great thing about this truck, it only takes a few minutes either way !!!

as i remember 14 degrees is for the 460 police intersepter motor. at least thats what my grand father had in his 77 ford truck. all others were 10 degrees. we found out it was the police motor by the fact that the air filter was about 1" taller than a regular one.
