1985 F150 update Re: Engine Quits
After being totally frustrated trying to pinpoint this engine problem I gave in and took the truck to the closest Ford dealership thinking they should be able to figure it out. After having my truck a few days they came to the conclusion that the Hall Effect in the distributor was defective. They assured me this was the problem. I didn't question that because I assumed it was the only logical item remaining that wasn't replaced. I opted to do the repair myself since they quoted me around $600 for them to do it. Long story short, I replaced the distributor and still have the same problem as before. So my 49k mile F150 has returned to its status as Yard Ornament while the Chevy trucks in the family with five times the mileage keep cruising right along. If there is one positive in this whole thing, it is that the Ford mechanics with all their knowledge and equipment couldn't diagnose this problem any better than I could.

Took a while to figure out the Scanner hook-up, but we finally got all the codes, for what they are worth. I’m an old Army electronics tech/computer repairman, and he is an old Navy electronics tech, we both have been backyard mechanics since birth, we will figure it out before we die. I’ll report back in a few months on this project.
He got it from a neighbor, who got it from a neighbor, who got if from …….
I saw on another old blog that a guy’s first statement was “I got a free 85’ F150 302 “ & I am still laughing”

Hey there, I'm going to be talking to you when I have an intelligent question...
Good reminder, I learned this back in 1968, on some automoble, started, idled fine, but would not accelerate to save your life, my dad said drop the exhaust, and say walla!
My dad was a Seaplane PBx & Jet engine mechanic..........

98 expedition 5.4 got fuel air and fire won't start
.
Ps- Check all wiring including fuse link and relays. Charging that battery wrong can fry things especially ECU's.
One more thing.....Does it start with starter fluid? I bet it will.....[/QUOTE]

Keep up with your regularly scheduled maintenance.
Stick with Motorcraft replacement parts.
Remember, all parts wear out in time.
Check your codes from time to time to see if you have an issue brewing.

The trucks that make it to this site are less than 1% of the trucks out on the road, so don't worry.
