Default 1984 Ford F-150 Tailgate

Will a 1990's tailgate fit my 1984 Ford F-150? And if not what years do fit it?

Yes they do. But (there is always a but) you gotta modify your bed a bit. 80-86 should be a direct fit. 87-96 will fit but you need the hinges (newer ones are smaller), strikers (you have U shaped strikers and newer ones use a bolt type striker) and some washers to act as spacers. The newer tailgates are maybe 3/8"-1/2" narrower. You will need to put a coulple small washers on each hinge bolt or it can slip off the hinges. You will also need to locate where to drill to put your new strikers and use a couple washers to make them set out into the bed a bit more to take up some of the gap. I have a 96 gate on my 86 150. Ill post a couple pics that i have and if you need help ill snap a few more and can walk you through the swap.

Hinges are identical and mount in the same place. The newer ones are smaller in diameter. Like, your 84s hinges are quarters and the newer ones are nickles.

Ill get a couple pics in the daylight tomorrow of the hinges and the strikers.

If you get the gate off another truck take everthing associated with it. The nuts are on 1 piece brackets and are mounted behind the tail lights. Might have to tap them loose but they are not welded to the bed.

Ok, cool. You can also swap beds between the years , the difference is the fender wells. 80-86 kind of tapers in and the 87-96 flares out on the well lip.
