Default 1977 f150 supercab

Just bought 1977 Ford F-150 supercab, has a 390 engine, I know it's not original engine. 1976 was last year for 390. My question is what other motor will enterchange? This one smokes out the right tail pipe, not sure if gunna rebuild or replace!! Thanks... Has 1978 grill!!!

All of them work with little to no modifications other then a bell house or turning over the motor mounts on the block. 390s are excellent engines. I vote rebuild. With a mild cam.. but youd probabaly just replace valve seals and it stop smoking

Nope, your screwed ,Nothing will work... Send me your address and i`ll give you a couple hundred to get it out of your hair..(smiley face here).. Your limited to 390/427/428 with your trans..BUT if you swap the trans,, a 460 fits nice !! My last BABY was a 79 with a 429 Cobra Jet i stuffed into it,,, That was a blast !! ..Your cheapest route would be to rebuild your 390..... That`s a beautiful truck you have there ! Ive always had a thing for Super cabs

If you're going to spend money on the powertrain (and the 390 isn't original anyway), I would suggest that the 429 is the motor you want. You will not be disappointed.
And my personal opinion is that a vintage truck like yours with a 429 is worth an awful lot more (and is way more impressive) than one with a 390. 390's are ok, but 429's are the one, hands down.

Nice truck, I love that body style the best. This is what I hate about Fords. The 289, 302, 351W and C share a bell housing. The 352, 360, 390, 427 and 428 share a different bell housing. The 351Modified 400 (not a modified Cleveland), 400, 429 and 460 share a bell housing. I hope this helps some. I would also vote to rebuild the 390, that are great torque motors and can make some great HP.
