This project is up there with the EcoBoost F100 on my radar. I think this thing has a lot of potential and I have a soft spot for putting broken or destroyed things back together. Glad you finally got it out of the hole it's been sitting in.

Looks like you had a good time pulling it out. Whoevers yard you helped clean up got a good deal. I would think the one fellers comment about bodywork and parts costing you more then a newer truck would be true. To fix that truck correctly you would have to pull the cab and spend some real time and money replacing all the rusted sections. New aftermarket sheet metal would be the way to go. And you said you are a good welder so you can do the bodywork yourself and you have a place to store it while you work then there you have it. I personally would scrap all that rusty cab, bed, fenders etx and turn it into a off road dune buggy or something if you will. The money to replace all the body parts will ad up. And then as you work you will realize this little part and that little part need to be replaced. The cost will ad up very quickly and so will the time. I recently read a Chevy thread about a guy who restored his dads old truck(sentimental value). He spend thousands of dollars and weeks and weeks of time and then had himself a nice cab ready to go back on the chassis. He had a long way to go after that. I guess what I am saying is its a real labor of love. Every time you tell your girlfriend you cant buy her this or that or even take her out cause you are saving for this part or that part you may wonder what you are doing. That's all something you have to figure out though. It can be gotten back on the road and it would be great to see but just know what you are getting into in terms of time and money. Part it out and take the money and buy a $2500 beater that's on the road now.

I was gonna ask, are you tearing down the upper portion of the engine to clean it? You said you vaccuumed it out, but something tells me that wont be enough.

Sell it, part it out and scrap the rest.

I'm getting rid of everything but the frame. I'm gonna park it and wait until I have the money to put a truck around it, looking at an old Ranger for a smaller, cheaper summer project

Just so you know, you could probably pick up a bare block 390 for pretty cheap. And Eco's advise is sound. There's unmolested body parts in the desert. You might pay a little bit for the part, but all it would take is a trailer and some gas money to bring the parts back. If you are wanting an extended cab (not the rusted out one) I would suggest you keep the old cab for the small parts in case you need them.
