17mpg city 1980 f100
well so far it seems ive been able to get 16-18mpg city driving with my 1980 f100 300i6 3 on the tree, only thing ive changed is the catalytic is removed and a magnaflow muffler, the air pump isnt connected (belt removed). otherwise running a set of 215/75 r15 tires. and this includes me driving well lets say at times a little spirited :P. like leaving a 150foot long patch of rubber lol had a few hundred pounds of skids in it wich i didnt even notice. and some light trail riding. anyone else get mileage like this??

Is this a question of good mileage or bad mileage. I would say 18 is not that bad. You could go to a 31 or 33 inch tire and the MPG will go up.
You should still be able to lay a strip of rubber too!!!

no im happy with the mileage for sure! considering what it is lol! i have no need for bigger tires besides manual breaks manual steering would be one heck of a chore lol previous owner said a 235 wide tire was almost impossible in tight situations lol.

I have 235/75R15's in the back and 215/75R15's (I think) in the front.
Drives great and doesn't lug in low or high. I could use a little more rear tire size. I was thinking 255/75 and then move the 235/75 to the front. I get the 18-20 mpg range now its great for a truck.
One thing that will help is to get a better air cleaner. The small 4" open element is fine.
When I move out of NJ, I am going to get an EFI head and two piece exhaust manifold. This will bump up compression and really let the truck breathe. Should add 20 or so HP and 2 MPG..

what kind of rpms are you runing on the hwy?, and in town? i think the trick on these ol i6 is to stay under 2000rpm.
condsidering i just did a weekend trip.90km 1 way to a buddys camp where 30km of it is an old washboarded dirt road then some small little trail into the camp also did a little trail ride too while i was there, with the fiberglass cap and the box loaded with 300lbs of gear or so. my round trip was like 35$ in fuel round trip 220 km trip about. so like 20mpg. i did stay about 95km/hr on the hwy. its an 80zone lots of hills and twistys. and 70km on the dirt road again lots of hills and some really long ones at that lol.
