Default Wiper Problem.

Had great help here before so I thought I would give this a try. 99 f-150 with 4.s 4x4. The problem: Wiper's will come on when ever they want. will make two to three swipes and shut off. Some time's they shut off for some time and other times will come on in about 5 minuets. Then some time they will not come on several days. They work fine when turned on with wiper lever. Saw some thing about this problem on NTSB web site. but no help. Jiggling the wiper seems to have no effect. Thanks

It sounds like, to me, that you either have a bad switch or that your motor has a short or the linkage is tight and causing the breaker to open. The motor has a built in breaker just incase there is high resistance (heavy snow on windshield or wipers are frozen to windshield). This prevents you from buring up the circuit. Once the breaker cools it will reset and the motor will work once again. The switches also fail easily- the contacts could be dirty which would make a poor connection. Use an ampmeter and check the current drsw while it is operating- your wiper linkage might need cleaned and lubricated. 13 years of weather can do nasty things to metal.

Had a Ranger with the same problem and it ended up being the switch.

Thanks what switch are we talking about. The lever on the column or somewhere else. Like I said, the wipers work fine when they are operated with lever on the column. One thing I forgot to mention when the come on by themselves, they operate in the slow speed.
