type oil good for high mileage??
I just purchased an 04 f150 4x4 and im about to do an oil change and im wondering what would be a good oil to start using? it has over 130,000 miles on it so should i go with the 5w20 or what would be good for the high miles? i need this truck to last me as long as possible so please help if you can

Had bad luck with oil formulated for high mileage engines. Bought our 2003 4.6L Expedition when new and used motorcraft 5W20 synthetic blend until 90,000 miles when I switched to the high mileage oil. Never had any leaks from this vehicle until the switch. It was bad enough that I checked the oil level every few days. I switched back to the motorcraft oil and the leaks didn't quit until 3 oil changes later. We also bought a used 2001 F-150 5.4L 4x4 with 126,000 miles on it, and it had small oil leaks until I changed the oil to Mobil 1 5W20 fully synthetic. Maybe the previous owner used high mileage oil, too. You couldn't pay me to use that stuff again.

It wasn't the thickness of the oil, it was the additives. I didn't change viscosity...just went with one for high mileage engines. Motor oil formulated for high mileage engines contains seal softeners to allow valve stem seals to soften enough to prevent oil from slipping past the valve stems into combustion chambers, thereby reducing oil burning / consumption. Whatever special additives it has, did affect the gasket material. With no leaks in the first 90,000 miles until the questionable oil change occurred, I'd say the coincidence was when the leak fixed itself after about the next three oil changes using the original oil again, and has yet to show back up.

Your lucky yours sealed up again, I know many people who tried the high mileage oil only to start leaking and the only way to fix them was to replace all the seals and gaskets. The seal softener or what ever it is destroyed all of the rubber seals and most all the other gaskets. The did not leak any oil for 120k and was switched over during a promotional free oil change, then started leaking like a sieve.
