Transmission "slips" out of Drive
My transmission sips into neutral after accelerating from a stop. If I turn off overdrive, it doesn't slip but I only seem to have a couple gears. Problem with that is, when I get up to 50 MPH I'm doing about 3,000 RPM's haha.
It's a 2007 FX4
I've been told it's possibly a broken overdrive ring. Any thoughts?

It has been awhile since I had an E4OD.
can you manually shift through each gear ( 1- 2 - 3 ) with OD off?
If yes, can you turn OD on when you reach 45-50 mph.?
Is the failure to shift when accelerating aggressively or gentle acceleration, or all the time?
Does your shifter have a OD on/off light? if yes, is it flashing at any point?
Other:
How many miles on it?
When was trans last serviced?

I tried manually shifting from 1,2,D and no luck. With OD off, it'll shift from 1 to 2 but stays in 2nd when I shift to D (3). With OD on, it'll shift from 1 to 2 but when I shift to D it's slips into neutral.
The failure is all the time regardless of how I accelerate.
It has 168,000 miles on it and the tranny was serviced around 100,000.
Thanks for all your help! I appreciate you taking the time to try and figure it out.
There is an O/D off light on the dash when I turn it off. It stays on continuously but never flashes.

Well,it has a lot of miles. That alone might suggest "worn out"
My memory says that transmission family was know for premature OD clutch wear and failure which dumped clutch material into the entire system. In addition that material would foul the valve body and the shift solenoids. My fix was a Jegs rebuilt that was sold as a fix to the earlier Ford design. Hopefully someone will jump in and add to or correct my assessment!
