Default Transmission Noise - Metallic "Shink"

Search on here but didn't find much help.

When sitting in idle or starting from a stop I hear a metallic "shink shink shink" noise coming from the area of the transmission / convertor underneath the truck. Tranny still shifts great and truck runs fine.

The sound is a metallic sounding "shink" noise that increases with RPM. It appears to go away when the auto tranny shifts to 2nd gear or any other gear. If I start in 2nd gear I don't hear it. I don't hear it in reverse.

I checked the dipstick and the fluid was dark red with a few probably small metallic flakes on it (plenty of fluid). It's a cheap truck with 212,000 miles. Unknown when the last time the auto tranny fluid was changed. Scared to change it knowing all the stories about replacing it on older vehicles.

Any idea what this might be and when the impending doom of said part might be?

Should I do anything to the fluid?

Thanks.

It sounds like a u joint but that doesn't explain the noise at idle though beyond that I don't know
