Default transfer case stuck in low

My 97 F150 transfer case is stuck in 2WD low range (not one of the options
on the instrument panel mounted selector switch). A couple weeks ago, I was leaving for work and switched to 4L while stopped in my driveway because I was slipping on the ice. After climbing up onto the paved roadway,
I switched it back to 2H and proceeded down the road. Approx 1/4 mile down
the road, I heard a clunk and the the whine of the gearbox and saw the engine revs jump. I pulled off the main road and tried all the combinations to
see if it would go back to 2H, but, no dice.

I've been trying to find info about the transfer case and what I've read so
far indicates that it shouldn't switch either in or out of low gear above 3-5 MPH.

Any suggestions what might be wrong and what to try first ?

Where can I get more info about what's inside the tranfer case ?

Thanks in advance.

According to the book, it's not supposed to shift either in or out of low
range except in neutral, below 5 mph, and with your foot on the brake.
Yes, I've tried that.

You might try backing up a few feet. Sometimes that's worked for me on other vehicles.
